Day 169 Bako National Park 23 July 2012

Today we headed to the Bako National Park by a combination of bus and boat. Our boat driver showed us some of the rock formations around the peninsula.

Ashore we took a 5.6km/3.5mile hike (about 4 hours, this is not the Netherlands or a stroll in the park) through the very hot and humid jungle.

 Angry red fire ants.
Huge jungle ants marching along on a branch.

We were lucky enough to see a poisonous viper snake and even luckier to see wild carnivorous pitcher plants.

When we were 200 meters from the park headquarters we encountered a family of wild macaques; even though we were armed with our walking sticks they were not the least intimidated by us.

However we were, and together with another couple we had to backtrack and wait until they had left the area. After that we ran without looking back.

We saw some wild boars.

Another lucky moment! We saw a nocturnal flying lemur sleeping in a tree.
