Day 64 Temple and Tunnels 9 April 2012

Today we took a combination tour of the Cai Dai Great temple in Tay Ninh and the Cu Chi tunnels. After a 3 hour bus ride we arrived at the temple, a regional religion with 3 million believers, that is a mix of Tao, Confucian and Buddhist religions, symbolized by the use of the three colors yellow red and blue.

One of their ‘saints’ is actually Victor Hugo. The prayer at noon was interesting to attend- the music would only be beautiful to a cat on a hot summer day.

After a boring lunch in a treetop gazebo we headed for the Cu Chi tunnels.

The Cu Chi tunnels was a compound where we could see how the Vietcong maneuvered around in a complex maze of tunnels, in their guerilla war with America. We could experience crawling in tourist version of the original tunnels. Martijn had to be on hands and knees because he was too tall.

Martijn was behind Ana and this is the only good picture he got of her – the rest are of her behind which will not be making it onto the blog.

We also got to experience an underground hideout for a surprise attack.

We also had some cassava/yuca - the diet of the Vietnamese at the time – which they would cook underground and filter the smoke in the early morning to camouflage the smoke with the morning jungle mist.

We also saw the barbaric primitive traps in action.

Everything was showcased in a Disney*land manner including the possibility to shoot a machine gun, making it a surreal experience.

We were back in Saigon for the evening moto traffic show – 4million motos on the road at the same time during rush-hour.

We enjoyed our first Pho (noodle soup with thin strips of meat) for dinner.
