Day 362 Paddle and a Hike 1 February 2013

Yesterday we heard from the park ranger that the bicycle tour we did was actually part of a triathlon, the Tamiami Trail Triathlon. Intrigued as we were we decided to complete the triathlon today and claim our prize!
The second leg was a 3 mile round trip kayak tour from the Gulf Coast visitor center to Sandfly Island. The kayaking offered us a totally different view of Everglades National Park than yesterday. We were lucky enough to spot some dolphins and pelicans.

After we were clearly lost we Martijn had to get out of the kayak to set us free again since we got stuck in the sand as it became low tide while we paddled out to the island.

After we finally found the island (everything looks a bit alike here) we walked the one mile loop to discover that this island actually had been inhabited in the past. We also found a lot of shells of horseshoe crabs.

We continued for the final leg of the triathlon, a 3 mile hike in the Cyprus National Preserve near the Oasis visitor center. The hike itself was a bit disappointing but we encountered several different landscapes, and met more alligators close to the center.

We found a pair of gators that reminded us of us!

After completion we were finishers of the Tamiami Trail Traithlon! We have our prize - a sticker- to prove it! We celebrated our victory at Cracker Barrel with fish, baked sweet potatoes and sugared carrots.
